Launched in 2016, Igloo Energy is another challenger brand with the Big Six in its sights. It believes energy supply should be about more than making profits for shareholders. That's why it wants to help make our homes smarter, more energy efficient, and cheaper to run.
Igloo aims to use technology and data to educate households on their energy usage and encourage them to cut how and when they use gas and electricity - being more energy efficient means you can cut your energy bills while also doing your bit for the environment.
Igloo aims to encourage greater energy efficiency among its customers through three simple steps:
When you sign up to an Igloo energy tariff, your home will be fitted with a smart meter that analyses your consumption and adjusts your tariff accordingly. You'll then receive energy saving advice via a smartphone app, which can also recommend the right time to change your boiler and white goods.
Igloo Energy is an independent, privately owned energy supplier based in Southampton. Matt Clemow is the CEO and Co-founder of Igloo Energy, and in 2019 Japan's Osaka Ga bought a minority stake in the business with an investment of around £20 million.
Switching to a cheaper energy deal is only half the battle when it comes to cutting the cost of your household gas and electricity bills. If you want to cut your bills further, it pays to be more energy efficient, and helping households use less energy is a big part of Igloo's proposition.
When you sign up with Igloo you’ll not only be given a smart meter to help you see how and when you're using energy, but your supplier will keep you updated with information on how you can cut your average energy usage to save energy and money.
Any electricity we use is generated from a combination of different fuels such as nuclear, coal and renewable sources (wind, water and the sun). The different amounts of each fuel contributed makes up a supplier's fuel mix.
Here is Igloo Enegry gas and electricity fuel mix as of April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020:
Electricity supplied by Igloo Energy % of total | Average for GB (for comparison) % of total | |
---|---|---|

Natural Gas | 0% | 41.4% |
Nuclear | 0% | 18.7% |
Renewable | 100% | 32.8% |
