Update6 August 2026: Ofgem will confirm the October price cap by 26 August 2026. Following the government's announced cut to VAT on electricity bills, forecasters have revised the October outlook down sharply — a rise of roughly 2% is now expected, rather than the 13% jump seen in July. In the meantime, the July deals below were priced well under the cap, with the cheapest at £1,383 a year.
The energy price cap rose 13% on 1 July 2026, taking the typical annual dual-fuel bill to £1,663. That level holds until 30 September, with the next change due on 1 October.
July's fixed tariffs told a very different story. The cheapest deal of the month came in at £1,383, around £280 below the cap, a saving of roughly 17% for a typical household. Almost every fixed tariff launched during July undercut the cap, and more than 130 new tariffs came to market across 12 suppliers.
Timing mattered. The sharpest prices landed in the first half of the month, with the cheapest deals clustered between £1,383 and £1,424 in the opening week. By the final week of July the cheapest available fixes had drifted back up towards £1,540 to £1,620, so the best-priced deals were short-lived.
Ofgem must confirm the October to December price cap by 26 August 2026, and it will take effect from 1 October. Two things have changed the outlook since our last update.
First, the government announced a cut to VAT on domestic electricity bills on 21 July, removing the 5% charge. Second, wholesale gas markets have steadied somewhat after the volatility earlier in the year. Taken together, energy consultancy Cornwall Insight now forecasts the October cap at around £1,700 for a typical household, approximately 2% above the current £1,663 level, and well below the £1,900-plus figures being forecast in the spring.
That is a forecast, not a confirmed figure, and it can move before Ofgem announces. But it does change the calculation for anyone weighing up a fix: the case for locking in is now about certainty through winter rather than escaping a steep autumn increase.
