British Gas Tariffs

Live Tariffs

British Gas currently has 4 live tariffs in the market. By live we mean a tariff that is available for customers to sign up to. Energy tariffs that are no longer available for sale, but which exist because many existing British Gas customers are signed up to them, are referred to as preserved tariffs. Tariffs that no longer exist are referred to as expired tariffs.

Clear & Simple

The Clear & Simple tariff was launched on 22 June 2012.

Clear & Simple is British Gas' new Standard energy tariff for new customers. It is a variable rate product which means prices are subject to change on 30 days advance notice.

The tariff has no fixed end date nor is there an exit penalty if you leave this tariff to switch to a different energy supplier. The tariff can be ended on 28 days notice, or 2 days if you are moving home.

Clear & Simple tariff rates were last increased on 16 November 2012.

Fixed Price October 2014

The Fixed Price October 2014 was launched on 12 July 2013.

With this tariff energy prices are fixed until 31 October 2014. At the end of fixed term you will be moved onto British Gas' standard variable rate at the time.

You can leave this tariff on 28 days notice. However if you cancel your supply agreement for this tariff before 31 October 2014, British Gas may (which means probably will) apply an exit fee of £30 per fuel.

Fixed Price October 2014 tariff rates were last changed on 30 August 2013.

Price Promise July 2015

Price Promise July 2015 was launched on 12 July 2013.

With this tariff energy prices are fixed until 31 July 2015. At the end of fixed term you will be moved onto British Gas' standard variable rate at the time.

For an average customer paying by Direct Debit this represents a premium of £121 per year when compared to British Gas' Clear & Simple tariff (as at 30 August 2013). The actual premium will vary depending upon individual circumstances (like where you live and how much energy you use).

Price Promise July 2015 is a standing charge tariff so customers are charged a single unit rate for their energy use and a standing charge.

You can leave this tariff on 28 days notice. However if you cancel your supply agreement for this tariff before 31 July 2015, British Gas may (which means probably will) apply an exit fee of £50 per fuel.

Sustainable Energy

The Sustainable Energy tariff was launched on 22 June 2012.

Electricity for this tariff is sourced from 100% renewable energy sources. It is a variable rate product which means prices are subject to change on 30 days advance notice.

With this energy plan British Gas will give you a free energy efficiency product (although they haven't told us what exactly that will be). Plus they donate £10 to the Energy for Tomorrow fund for each customer that signs up. The fund supports renewable energy projects at community level.

The tariff has no fixed end date nor is there an exit penalty if you leave this tariff to switch to a different energy supplier. The tariff can be ended on 28 days notice, or 2 days if you are moving home.

Sustainable Energy rates were last increased on 16 November 2012.

EnergySmart

EnergySmart is not actually a tariff but an optional add-on service available free of charge with selected British Gas tariffs. With this service you get a package of freebies designed to help you better see how much energy you are using and paying for each month. The idea is that it helps you cut back on your energy usage and so saves you money.

By signing up to EnergySmart you’ll receive the following;

- A free Energy Monitor worth £35

- A Predictive Spend Calculator (available online)

- SMS meter read submissions

- SMS and email reminders

- Consumption history information (available online)

Using EnergySmart means you will get accurate monthly bills as opposed to estimated bills (provided you submit your meter readings online). This means that all customers receive monthly online billing with this tariff.

Customers paying by monthly direct debit customers will make a variable direct debit payment monthly based on their meter read. Customers choosing the Cash/Cheque option will need to make their payment either by Debit or Credit Card on a monthly basis.

There is no cancellation fee with this service.

Important
To stay on the EnergySmart service you have to register for online account management and receive all correspondence electronically. If you don't do this within 7 days of coming onto supply with British Gas (in the case of new customers) or signing up to EnergySmart (in the case of existing customers) you will be kicked off the service.
